The Fire Marshal's Office

The office is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The following is general information for builders, architects, homeowners, and others doing work in the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District.
Please note: the District has adopted the 2021 editions of the International Building and Fire Codes, with certain additions and deletions.
Occupancy permits
Before a new business may open, the Fire Prevention Bureau requires a fire and life-safety inspection. Once the application is complete and payment is received, the District schedules an occupancy inspection to determine whether the space complies with District ordinances. The premises may not be occupied until all infractions are corrected and a Certificate of Occupancy is issued by the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District and the applicable municipality (City of Florissant, City of Hazelwood, Village of Calverton Park, or St. Louis County).
Building permits
The Florissant Valley Fire Protection District is its own political subdivision. Even if you have applied for permits from the City of Florissant, the City of Hazelwood, or St. Louis County, you must also apply for a permit with the District. The District has its own permit application, plan-review process, fee schedule, and inspections for fire prevention and life safety.
To process a permit, submit the following:
- A plot plan showing the building's placement relative to streets and neighboring properties, drawn to scale or with dimensions noted.
- One complete set of building plans and specifications.
- Plans for all commercial buildings, signed and sealed by a professional designer.
- A completed permit application.
Once these items are submitted, a plan-review letter will be mailed or emailed to you letting you know your permit is ready to be picked up and paid for.
Inspections
- A 24-hour notice is required for all inspections.
- A framing and ceiling inspection is required before drywall is installed. All subcontractor work (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) must be complete before the inspection.
- A final inspection is required when the building is complete, before any furniture, equipment, or stock is moved in.
- Re-inspections of the framing, ceiling, or final may be required if work fails inspection, and additional fees apply. These fees may be one-half the original permit fee per inspection and must be paid before another inspection is performed.
