Car crashes remain the number one killer of children ages 3 to 14. Always use the proper child safety seat, and once a child outgrows a booster seat, make sure they use a seat belt. Children 12 and under should always ride in the back seat, and adults should model correct seat-belt use every time.
Missouri Child Restraint Law (RSMo 307.182)
- Children under 4 years old or under 40 pounds must be in an appropriate child safety seat.
- Children ages 4 through 7 who weigh at least 40 pounds must be in a child safety seat or booster seat, unless they are over 80 pounds or taller than 4 feet 9 inches.
- Children 8 and older, or who weigh at least 80 pounds or are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall, must be secured by a safety belt or an appropriate booster seat.
The law applies to all cars, pickup trucks, and vans. Only public carriers for hire are exempt. This is a primary law: an officer who observes an improperly restrained child may stop the vehicle for that reason alone.
Schedule a seat check
The District has certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians on staff who will show parents and caregivers proper installation and use, and check that a seat is not damaged, expired, or recalled. Please bring your vehicle and car-seat owner's manuals.
