Smoke Detectors Save Lives

At approximately 8:20 pm on January 3rd in Florissant, this single family residence became the scene of a significant one alarm fire. Preliminary investigation shows fire originated in the attached garage. Because the residents, who were on the second floor at the time, had properly installed and working smoke detectors, they were alerted to the blaze when the fire first began and were able to escape their home quickly and call 911. Fast response by Florissant Valley, Robertson and Hazelwood Fire Districts limited most of the heaviest damage to the garage and kitchen. There was also smoke damage throughout the rest of the home. However, the residence is salvageable and the home owners are safe because of their use of smoke detectors. It is a object lesson for all home owners.

Please check our Facebook page for the most recent news about which neighborhood he will be visiting.

FVFPD Firefighters Make Dramatic Rescue

Early Thursday morning in the 2000 block of Splendor Drive in Florissant, Florissant Valley Firefighters responded within 3 minutes to a residential fire with two occupants trapped in separate bedrooms. The patients were extricated from the burning home through bedroom windows in the rear of the house. Fortunately, the doors to both bedrooms were closed, which effectively kept the blaze from spreading into the rooms with the occupants. Both patients were transported by FVFPD EMS to hospitals for treatment. Departments from Blackjack and Hazelwood were on scene in mutual aid.

Several news media outlets did stories on the fire and the rescue. The home had no working smoke detectors. The entire incident was an important lesson on the value of smoke detectors and safety actions like always closing bedroom doors while you are sleeping.

Such actions are truly life-saving things to know. If you have any questions, feel free to call the FVFPD at (314) 837-4894.
