Quick Actions Save Student’s Life

On March 31st, Florissant Valley Fire Protection units 4015 and 4017 were dispatched to Cross Keys Middle School for a reported seizure. While en route, the units were advised that the patient was a 14-year-old student in cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, the crews found that members of the staff and the School Resource Officer (SRO) from the Florissant Police Department had initiated CPR on the patient and used an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to administer a shock to the patient’s heart. That shock resuscitated the patient, and upon the arrival of paramedics, the patient had a pulse and was struggling to breathe. Paramedics took over and continued patient care, stabilized the patient, and transported the patient to a local hospital. Thanks to the quick actions of school staff members Scott McMurry, Jeremy Van Pelt, Vickie Curtis, and Florissant Police Department SRO Kim Berry, as well as the continued care and stabilization provided by Captain Chris Hefner, Engineer Dave Woytus, Firefighter/Paramedic Jason Dauster, Firefighter/Paramedic Jason Drezek, and Firefighter/Paramedic Zach Krato, this patient’s life was saved and is expected to make a full recovery. Congratulations!!
